Pop music’s rise in the early 60s was driven because of the availability of transistor radios and cheap broadcast equipment that allowed anyone to play records to anyone that wanted to listen. The UK film Pirate Radio paints a rose tinted, romantic picture of what this period looked like for those transmitting. Mum told me that she used to listen to Radio Luxemburg under covers at night, until the batteries she’d managed to find ran out.
